An Ophthalmologist Is An Eye Doctor

The human eye transforms light into visual reality. It is subject to a panoply of diseases, some minor and some with catastrophic repercussions. The American Academy of Ophthalmology advises early treatment of any disorders. Examinations are important to facilitate this. One eye disease, glaucoma, will cause blindness if left untreated. It deteriorates the optic nerve and is caused by intraocular pressure. It is asymptomatic until in the advanced stages. If detected in time, the progress of the disease can be slowed down by reducing the pressure.

Cataracts are the disorder that affects the eyes by clouding the lens and thus, obstructing clear vision. Normally, they do not cause pain. They develop very slowly and can go unnoticed for some time. Their development can be caused by chemical changes in the lens that normally accompany the aging process. Others are caused by a genetic birth defect. Still others are the result of trauma.

Macular degeneration is an eye condition in which the center of the retina, the macula, deteriorates and leads to loss of central vision. It is considered a normal part of the aging process. Eye allergies can occur at any age. They are a reaction to an irritant that makes them itchy and swollen. Amblyopia is also known as lazy eye. It is poor vision in one eye that failed to develop normally during childhood. These are some of the most common eye ailments.

A common eye infection is conjunctivitis. Also known as pink-eye, it is evidenced by infection of the membrane that lines the eyelids and swelling. Causes include bacteria, viruses, exposure to chemicals, fungi, extended-wear contact lenses and chlamydia. This condition is contagious but responds well to treatment.

Symptoms include the formation of crusts on the eyelids, blurred vision, itching, redness (as the name pink-eye implies), sensitivity to light and increased tearing. Eye drops containing antibiotics are the treatment for bacterial conjunctivitis; warm compresses applied to the closed eyes will sooth the discomfort. The family or school can be reinfected unless precautions are taken.

You can also help yourself with eye drops such as Stilla or others and use it regularly to help your eyes relax and wet. These kind of drops help preventing eyes infection and also prevent eyes’ redness.

For a better hygiene for your that mostly precious organ, please be responsible to go check in at your Ophthalmologist place at least once a year.
