Eyeglass Crafts

Eyeglasses crafts are fun and easy to do. Old glasses can be recycled into something new, and you can even make cheap and easy accessories for your glasses. Kids can create unique frames to wear and play with their friends and siblings, too. These crafts don’t require purchasing expensive new supplies; just use whatever leftovers you have from previous projects.

Recycle the Lenses
The lenses of old eyeglasses can be turned into canvases to make small paintings on. Grouping a whole bunch can spruce up any space by creating a unique effect. Simply pop out the lenses and draw around them on watercolor paper to obtain the exact shape. Then draw a picture and paint it in with watercolors. After allowing it to dry, cut out the shape, apply glue to the paper and stick it on to the lens. These pieces of art can be glued to pins or combs to make unique jewelry or other accessories, too.

Accessories
Eyeglasses holders are easy to make. Simply take an old necktie that is wide enough to slip a pair of glasses into and cut a length of 10 inches (excluding the point). Fold the edges together on one of the open sides and glue all but one side shut. The glasses can be slipped in from the open side. You can also create a holder from a square potholder by folding it in half and sewing two of the sides together. The loop should go on top as it can be used to hang the holder.

Picture Frames
An imaginative way to use eyeglass shapes is to use them for picture frames. Using heavy card stock, either draw or print out a template shape of eyeglass frames and cut it out. To stabilize the frame, if you are going to display the photos on a shelf, you will need to also cut out handles and attach them. To use them to frame photos in a scrapbook, you do not need to include the handles. Try funky shapes, such as stars, hearts or watermelon slices, and decorate as desired.

Made From Scratch
This project allows you to make fun and funky eyeglasses from scratch. All that is required is card stock, cellophane paper, glue, markers and other embellishments. The template can be hand drawn or printed on to card stock, cut out, colored and decorated before being glued together. The cellophane paper is cut out and glued in place of the lenses. Another way to make fun glasses is to cut out egg cups from an egg carton, attach pipe cleaners for the handles and decorate them.
