How to Clean Your Eyeglass Lenses: All materials including coatings

One of the worst things you can do is clean your glasses with your shirt. I’m certainly guilty of this myself. Basically what you’re doing is taking anything that’s on your lenses and grinding it into your lenses. If you have any kind of coating on your lenses, you’re going to damage it. NEVER EVER use Windex. If you’re lenses are starting to fog or turn yellow, this may have been a mistake you made in the past. So from here on out, follow these suggestions.

Instructions
1 Go to your local optical store and purchase a lens cleaning kit . You will want lens cleaning solution in a spray bottle and a microfiber cloth.

2 You can also make your own lens cleaning solution by getting a travel size spray bottle and filling it with water. For a 2 oz bottle, put about 3 drops of Joy dish detergent in it. If you use too much soap, it will get smeary. Joy is recommended because it doesn’t have anti-degreasing agents in it. Anything that’s too harsh will damage your coatings.

3 Spray the solution on the front and back on your lenses.

4 Use your fingertips to rub the solution in a circular pattern on your lenses to loosen anything on your lenses and to get smudges off.

5 Use the microfiber cloth to dry off the solution.

Tips & Warnings
Don’t use a microfiber cloth without the solution. You will only grind in whatever is on your lenses causing swirl marks and pitting.

Never use anything like Windex.
Some cleaning kits may contain a high amount of isopropyl alcohol. This may damage your coatings over time. Although it’s good to get off particularly bad smudges or hairspray, it should only be used occasionally. You may also find this with pre-moistened clothes.
