Instructions to Make an Eyeglass Lanyard

Eyeglass lanyards are used to hold eyeglasses around your neck when not in use. They may be made from numerous material and are sold in many designs. The eyeglass lanyard has loops on both ends to attach to the stems of the eyeglasses. These loops hold the eyeglasses while they dangle from your neck.

Instructions
things you’ll need:
Embroidery thread
Low-tack masking tape
Scissors
1 Cut six pieces of embroidery thread, each 4 feet in length. Gather all six pieces together so the ends are even. Tie a knot approximately 2 inches from one end. Secure the knotted end to a table with low-tack masking tape.

2 Use macrame knots when making your eyeglass lanyard.

Pick up a piece of embroidery thread that is on the outside edge of the knotted thread bundle and make a loose “L” over the top of the other pieces of thread. Take the end of the “L” thread and place it under the bundle and up through the crook of the “L”. Hold the bundle of thread with your opposite hand and pull the end of the “L” string until it is tight against the initial knot. This particular knot is called a half hitch spiral in macrame terminology. Repeat this process with the same piece of thread for a total of 10 repetitions.

3 Place the piece of thread back in the bundle. Select a different thread from the bundle and repeat the knotting process for 10 repetitions before moving on to another piece of thread. Repeat this process with all the pieces of thread in the bundle. Move the masking tape and secure the lanyard after 6 inches of knots. This will help to keep the bundle of thread taut while making more “L” knots.

4 Tie a slipknot on each end of the macrame-knotted cord. Trim off any excess. Slip the eyeglass stems through the loops and tighten.

Tips & Warnings
Adjust the length of the embroidery thread for a shorter or longer lanyard. Alternative macrame stitches may be used for the lanyard. Beads may be added for embellishments throughout the knotting process. Slip the bead over the bundle of thread and secure with the next “L” knot.
