Information on Children’s Eyewear

If you think that vision impairment comes only from old age, think again. Eyes can lose their flexibility and precision of sight even at a very early stage, and so you must be careful to consider whether your children are taking care of their eyes or not. You have to make them be aware of the difficulties that they would otherwise face if they disregarded their responsibilities.

So next time when you see them squinting in front of the T.V and while doing their homework, or perhaps calling the bird in a tree a monkey, or reading out “craps” when the word spells “scraps”, it is time that you took your child to your doctor, and get his eyes checked.

o Your child might be suffering from either one of these two vision weaknesses: myopia or also called nearsightedness, or hyperopia, which is also known as farsightedness. Depending upon the prescription that the doctor gives you, you will have to order for the right spectacles of the right power which is framed accurately so that it does not cut into your child’s nose.

o Since it will be difficult for you to make your own decision about these things, it is better that you follow exactly what the doctor tells you, and it is never too wrong to ask other professionals for advice. To choose the right frames, you need to go by the optician’s words. Like for example, if the lenses of the glasses are too thick because of high power, it is necessary that the frames are small so as to balance the entire device accurately on the bridge of your child’s nose. Remember, if the glasses are uncomfortable to wear, your kid will never wear it, no matter how much you threaten or scold him to do so.

o If looks matter so much to your swanky-wanna-be kid, you can arrange things to thin down the lenses a bit, so as to give it an overall smart appearance. You child will no more be a dork, but a chic, sharp, hip and cool youngster.

o When the eye-doctor advises that it is necessary that your kid wears the specs continuously, you will have to make sure that this rule is never violated. However, it is also true that the eyes start becoming too dependent when you start to wear eye glasses constantly, so that you cannot do without them at all. Eyes should be allowed to breathe, and you have to let them exercise to keep up their potency. Therefore, allow your kid to work without specs for a while. But these works must never include reading, sketching or watching T.V. He could roam around or play, but not do any activity that requires a lot of eye work without specs.

o Give your kid plastic lenses to wear. They are durable, and even when your kid is frolicking or horsing around, you do not have to worry about the ‘shattering’ emergencies. For a fashionable look, offer them frames made of metal, which are also called “wires”.

o For the safest situation, give your child specs made of polycarbonate. This is the same substance that is used in bulletproof glass, being sturdy enough to escape scratches, and coated from ultraviolet rays. It is lighter than ordinary plastic too, and hence is worth the buy.

o When your kid has to wear the glasses constantly, it is a smart move to keep an extra back-up pair back at home, so that you can lay you hands on it the moment your child breaks his current one somehow. Sports goggles or prescription sunglasses are also a viable option. The latter is a spec with an extra coat for protection from UV rays. Whenever necessary, this coat can be taken off and used normally.

Make sure that you use the precautionary steps to keep your child’s eyes safe and fit. Since it is least expected that your young child will be able to manage the responsibility, you will have to shoulder the burden yourself. Take care of your child’s eyes, and ensure for your kid a safer future.
