Things You Need to Know About Prescription Motorcycle Goggles

It used to be at one time if you wore prescription glasses you had two choices, wear contacts so you could wear regular riding glasses or wear the goggles that fit over your prescription glasses. With today’s technology, we now have many choices, you can purchase glasses or prescription motorcycle goggles that are RXable, meaning that they will except a prescription.

Depending on the model, some frames can except the prescription or some models have a prescription insert. They usually do have RX limitations, be careful in picking out your model and knowing what your RX limitations are. Now with Prescription motorcycle goggles you do not have to look goofy by having only one choice. There are many choices to choose from. The ones that take the insert, the insert goes in behind your goggle lens, photochromic, or lenses that automatically darken from the UV rays will not work right behind these lenses. Even clear lenses that protect your eyes from harmful UV rays will not allow photochromic lenses to work.

Clear lenses are best for in the insert and just use the smoked lenses that come with the prescription motorcycle goggles. Prescription motorcycle goggles that you can have your prescription put in the frame are nice because you can pick transitions lenses if thats what you like, or you can pick a sunglass lens to be put in. There are many prescription lenses to pick from. With the insert you can have plastic lenses put in, that is the cheapest, because the insert goes in behind the goggle lens, if the goggle lens is a good polycarbonate lens, than you can go with plastic if you wish.

Polycarbonate is lighter, about 30% thinner and shatter resistant. If your looking for thinner than polycarbonate you can also purchase High-Index lenses, They are not impact resistant but are thinner than plastic and lighter. They are pricier than plastic or polycarbonate. High Index comes in 1.60, 1.67, and 1.70. 1.70 is the most expensive, is 50% thinner than plastic and the lightest of them all. None of the High-Index lenses, Plastic, or glass lenses are impact resistant. Not a good choice for your Prescription motorcycle goggles unless your putting them in an insert and the insert is going behind a good impact resistant lens that has been tested like MIL-PRF 31013 or ANSI Z87.1 approved for safety.

Prescription Sunglass Lenses

Polarized Gray and Brown a very good lens for prescription motorcycle goggles

If you drive a car or ride a motorcycle you are exposed to sunlight, these lenses are a must for maximized protected vision. Polarized lenses greatly enhanced visual acuity, color contrast and comfort by blocking blinding glare. No other lens or treatment can perform this function. The most popular polarized colors are gray and brown. But, specialty polarized colors are available.

Drivewear, the most expensive, but worth a look for your prescription motorcycle goggles.

Combining two of the best technologies – Transitions Photochromic technology and Nupolar Polarization – these lenses are unique. The perfect solution for daytime driving conditions from overcast, low light conditions to daylight driving conditions to outdoor bright light. Drivewear lenses start with a high contrast green/yellow color that changes to copper then dark reddish brown and will activate inside your car. 100% UVA & UVB protection.

Transitions, the most common lens.

The best choice for everyday use, these lenses protect your eyes from damaging UV rays and glare. Clear indoors and automatically darken with changing light, they provide convenient protection. These lenses are activated by UV rays and sunlight and do not darken inside a car. Available in gray or brown and we do recommend an anti-reflective coating with these lenses.

There are many more different choices then this, so many more, can not mention them all here. These are the more common choices. You can buy prescription motorcycle goggles and the choices for lenses are endless.
