How to Make a Pattern for Foam Eyeglasses

Foam glasses are inexpensive glasses usually worn by children. Craft foam is a thin, flexible material that has a variety of uses. Many craft stores sell foam glasses premade, but they may not have the shape or design that you are looking for. Luckily, it is easy to make a pattern to create your own foam glasses. The sky is the limit in designing a pattern for foam glasses. Allow the children to create their own designs for even more customization.

Instructions
things you’ll need:
Sunglasses or picture of glasses for reference
Measuring tape
Pencil
Paper
Cardstock paper
Scissors

1 Use the picture of the glasses or the sunglasses for style inspiration. Measure the distance between the person’s eyes, the distance across his or her head and the distance from the eyes to the ears. Make the bridge of the glasses the same distance as the between-the-eye measurement, the edge of the glasses the width of the face measurement and make the sides of the glasses long enough to curl over the back of the person’s ears.

2 Draw two shapes for the pattern. Draw the front glasses pattern, then make an earpiece pattern. You can make two copies of the pattern once you transfer it onto the foam.

3 Add an extra tab to each of the earpieces so that they can glue to the main glasses frames. Make the insides of the eye holes large enough to see through. You can make the glasses in any shape that you want.

4 Add design embellishments to the glasses. You can make cat-eye glasses, glasses in the shapes of circles, stars triangles or whatever other shape you can think of. As long as you keep the basic glasses design, you can transform the pattern and glasses into anything you want.

5 Transfer the pattern pieces to cardstock paper once you have the final design. This is sturdier than regular paper and it will allow you to use the design more than once. Simply trace around the pattern onto the foam when you cut it out.
