How to Repair an Acrylic Eyeglass Frame

Eyeglass frames are often made of acrylic. While this is a strong and durable plastic, it can break under stress. Major breaks may require you to replace the entire frame, which can be quite expensive. Some minor breaks, however, can easily be repaired at home with strong binding glue. This process is economical and straightforward.

Instructions
things you’ll need:
Fast-bonding glue, suitable for acrylics
Toothpick
Lint-free cloth

1 Take a close look at the break on the glasses. If the break is not clean or there are pieces missing, you may not be able to glue the frame together.

2 If the break is clean or in a straight line, wipe the eyeglass frame with a lint-free cloth to remove any dust from the area.

3 Read the directions on your glue, making certain it is compatible with acrylic. Also make note of the recommended drying time.

4 Dab a small amount of glue onto a toothpick and quickly rub the glue from the toothpick onto both sides of the broken acrylic. Make sure the glue is still wet during this process.

5 Hold the two broken pieces tightly together for at least 60 seconds or as directed by your glue manufacturer.

6 Gently place the eyeglasses on a solid surface. Allow the frame to dry on its own for the next hour to ensure that the glue has properly bonded the break.

Tips & Warnings
Visit your optometrist regularly to make sure your eyeglasses are properly adjusted for your face. This will prevent undue stress to the acrylic frame.

Wash any fast-bonding glue from your skin or any other surface immediately with warm water and soap. If the glue gets into your mouth or eyes, seek medical attention immediately.
