Hinge Repair for Eyeglasses

So you need to repair the hinge on your eyeglasses. Those who have eyeglasses know that living without them can be somewhat tricky, especially if you depend on them to drive. You also may not have hundreds of dollars to replace a pair when someone sits or steps on them. The good news is that frames are relatively easy to repair, even if they won’t always quite look like new.

Instructions
things you’ll need:
Eyeglass repair kit
Soldering iron
Solder
Pliers
Masking tape
Super glue

1 Examine your glasses to determine what is wrong with the hinges. Note whether the screw is missing, the screw hole is stretched out or if the hinge itself is cracked or even missing a piece.

2 Insert a new screw into the hinge. Using the screws from the eyeglass repair kit, insert and twist the screw tightly into place. If this works, you’re done. If not, proceed to the next step.

3 Cover your tips of pliers with masking tape to avoid scratching your frames, and gently bend the holes of the hinge back into place. Do this equally around all sides of the hinge. Doing this will tighten the holes of your hinges to allow you to insert a screw as described in Step 2. If the hinge will now take a screw, add a couple of drops of super glue to ensure a tight and secure fit.

4 Hold your glasses together in the out position, similar to how they would appear if you were wearing them. Using a soldering iron that has been heating for 10 minutes, touch the solder to the iron and allow the liquid metal to drip through the hole in the hinge and around all sides and through the hinge hole. Allow to cool. You will not be able to close the hinge again, but the glasses will be wearable.

Tips & Warnings
If you need a temporary solution, stretch out a paper clip and insert through the holes in the hinge. Wrap it around both sides of the frame and tighten as much as possible. This should make the glasses briefly wearable.
