How to Repair a Cracked Eyeglass Frame

Nearly all eyeglass frames are made of plastic and are designed to be lightweight and resilient. Everyday wearing takes a toll on eyeglasses, and over a period of time, it is possible for them to break or for the frames to crack. This is especially true with children who often misplace, drop or sit on their glasses. Each incident does not require a trip to the eye doctor for repair. Some repairs can be done simply in just a few seconds at home.

1 Lay down some paper towels or an old cloth onto your work area. This is to protect the surface that you are working on from getting any glue on it.

2 Scrape away any old glue from prior repairs. Wash your glasses with soap and water to remove any facial oils or residue that might be on the frames. Dry thoroughly. This will ensure that the glue will adhere to the frame when applied.

3 Put the broken pieces of the frame back together to ensure a nice, clean fit so you do not have to waste any time when you apply the glue. Apply a few drops of a quick-drying glue. Place the frames back together and hold firmly. Be certain not to allow any of the glue to ooze out onto your fingers so you do not get stuck to the frames.

4 Dip a cotton swab in nail polish remover and gently wipe away any excess glue. Be extremely careful not to allow any drips, as they may fall onto the lenses and cause damage.

5 Dry the glasses completely, or for at least an hour. Carefully scrape away with a butter knife any dripping glue that you may have missed earlier.

Tips & Warnings
Use an epoxy glue as opposed to other types of glue, as it will allow the repair to last longer.

Eyeglass frames are often made of plastic, so never allow the glue or the nail polish remover to drip or come in contact with the lenses.
