How to Adjust Plastic Eyeglass Frames

Plastic eyeglasses are fun, fashionable and functional, but unlike metal eyeglass frames, they’re not always easy to adjust. Plastic frames can be ill-fitting directly after purchase, or sometimes they may become warped or crooked after long-term wear or unintentional damage. This can be not only uncomfortable on your face or ears, but if the optical lenses becomes un-centered with the eyes, you may experience headaches due to eye strain.

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:
Hair dryer
Pot
Small Phillips screwdriver
Thin towel
Tongs

1 Place the tip of the Phillips screw driver in one of the hinges.

2 Twist to the right very slowly. If the screw turns easily, it means it was loose.

3 Continue to slowly turn the screw with the screwdriver until it tightens. Be careful not to tighten it too much.

Using Hot Water to Adjust Plastic Frames
1 Place the arms of your frames into hot water while holding your plastic frames with a set of tongs. The water should not be boiling, but it should be near that point.

2 Hold the frames in the water for eight to 10 seconds.

3 Pull the plastic frames out of the water.

4 Hold the frames with a thin towel and slowly bend the arms to your liking. If the plastic doesn’t bend, don’t force them as they may break. You may put them in water again for a little longer and try again, or you may place them back into the water if they cool too much while you bend because they need to remain warm.

Using Hot Air to Adjust Plastic Frames

1 Place your hair dryer on the hottest setting.

2 Point the nozzle blowing air directly onto the area of the frame you want to bend.

3 Rotate the hair dryer around the area so that it heats as evenly as possibly.

4 Hold the hair drier nozzle 2 inches away from the frames for 15 to 20 seconds.

5 Hold the frames with a thin towel and slowly bend the arms to your liking. If the plastic doesn’t bend, don’t force the arms as they may break. You may try heating them a little longer, but if that doesn’t work, you may have to seek professional assistance.

Tips & Warnings
If your plastic eyeglasses frame is extremely crooked, visit your optometrist’s office and ask an optician to help you.
Do not use an oven to heat your plastic eyeglass frames. This can cause the plastic to bubble..
